I had the great privilege of speaking in chapel at Madison Christian School this month. The assigned topic was, “You are blessed.” Without question, that’s absolutely true. I am blessed. You are blessed. We are blessed. And the proper response to that fact is a deep level of thanksgiving.
In that chapel service, I shared with the students some selected verses from Colossians that emphasize the need for an attitude of thankfulness:
3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you.
7 Have your roots in him. Build yourselves up in him. Grow strong in what you believe, just as you were taught. Be more thankful than ever before.
15 Let the peace that Christ gives rule in your hearts. As parts of one body, you were appointed to live in peace. And be thankful.
2 Give a lot of time and effort to prayer. Always be watchful and thankful.
17 Do everything you say or do in the name of the Lord Jesus. Always give thanks to God the Father through Christ.
In order to stimulate the thinking of these K-6 grade students, their teachers, parents, and grandparents – I generated a quick list of things I am grateful for – not just on Thanksgiving Day – but 365 days a year. Here is my quick list of 20 things:
Love of Jesus
Grace of Jesus
Forgiveness of Jesus
Healing when sick
Comfort when sad
Water when thirsty
Food when hungry
Bathroom – because I have been place on mission trips where there were none.

Let’s do our best to cultivate grateful hearts. And remember, I am blessed, you are blessed, we are blessed!
