In November of 2008, I presented a sermon based on Psalm 91. This Psalm contains many assurances of the Lord’s care for us and his protection of us. For instance, “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge,” and verse 11 that reminds us, “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” There are special moments in life when we are very thankful for those facts.
Diane and I had an incident on Friday night where we know that we were protected by the unseen hand of God. We were returning home at about 8:30 p.m. on the four lane highway close to our home. We were just having casual conversation when I realized that headlights were coming toward me. A motorist was going the wrong way – and the closing speed was very rapid. It was necessary for me to take pretty drastic evasive action to avoid a head-on crash. The Groveport Police Department converged on the situation in second and got the motorist stopped.; To call it a “near miss” does not really do it justice. There was only a whisker of distance between our vehicles. Diane said to me, “Thanks for saving us.” Then we quickly agreed that I did not save anyone – it was the unseen hand of God – clearly spoken of in Psalm 91 that protected us. About a half hour later we looked at each other and said, “We could be in the hospital right now.” More accurately, were it not for God’s protection they probably would have been picking up pieces of us off the highway.
One more thing….can you imagine how many times with Lord reaches out his unseen hand and protects us from harm and we never even realize it? Our God is an awesome God.
