The movie COCO is quickly approaching the box office. Many people will simply rush out with their kids to see it. This post is not necessarily to oppose the movie, but one thing we would like to do is inform parents on some current and upcoming things for kids through movies and other things. COCO is a preteen boy wanting to find why his family is against music. Children’s Ministry Magazine reports on current things for kids and says “he accidentally enters the land of the dead.” While he is there he meets passed away family members and must earn their blessing by performing music. Just understand that this movie is rooted in the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead, which involves alters to the dead, and the hope that their spirit would “briefly return during that time-some parents may be opposed to their kids viewing it.”
Simply put, be careful and make the decision that is right for your family, but this movie may confuse kids thoughts on the afterlife and muddy their Christian worldview. On the other hand, it may provide you the opportunity to have a good conversation with your kids if you think they are ready for that. Disney is continually pushing a social agenda, and it is best to at least be aware of it.
